Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Loss

PRP for Hair Loss

Over half of the male population will begin to lose their hair by the time they’re 50.

If it’s only a matter of time before your hair disappears, then it was only a matter of time before science provided us a solution.

Enter platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

This treatment can help regrow lost hair with no side effects but mild discomfort at the injection site.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

Technicians will draw blood and separate the platelets from the plasma. Then doctors inject plasma into the areas on the scalp experiencing hair loss to promote cell growth and stimulate collagen production.

Sessions will typically be spread out over three months to begin, with each injection costing between $500 and $1,000.

How Does It Compare With Other Options?

The only other FDA-approved medications for hair loss are finasteride and minoxidil. But neither can be trusted for consistent results and both come with their own side effects, including sexual dysfunction in men.

Even hair transplantation requires a longer recovery time than PRP and known to leave scars.

What Does the Research Show?

Research from Dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, says that after three months patients can regrow upwards of 40 percent of the hair they have lost.

Other studies from India (2014) and Italy (2017) also demonstrated a clear increase in hair after using PRP therapy.

Who Makes for a Good Candidate?

PRP is completely safe for most people. However, those with thyroid disease or lupus will not see any sustained results and neither will anybody on blood thinners.

It also pays to jump on PRP quick as the therapy has seen premium results if hair loss is recent.

Although this procedure is not yet FDA approved, it offers a great and safe way for people to encourage hair growth.
