The Thread Lift Trend: Is the Facelift Being Replaced?
Move Over Facelift … The Thread Lift is Here to Stay
For individuals interested in facial rejuvenation, there are many non-surgical options in addition to a traditional facelift. The thread lift is an FDA-approved procedure that can tighten the skin without the incisions, sutures and downtime that a surgical lift requires.
The thread lift has been available for some time, and Gwyneth Paltrow has openly discussed its benefits. However, Gwyneth was referring to an older thread lift method, and thanks to technological advances, today’s thread lift is much safer and more effective.
What is a Thread Lift?
A thread lift uses dissolvable sutures with attached cones to lift loose skin on the face, neck, and jowls. It is performed under local anesthesia and is an out-patient treatment.
How is the Procedure Performed?
Once the treatment area has been numbed, a long, thin needle is used to insert the threads and cones underneath the skin. The cones are able to connect to the skin and reposition it to provide a more youthful appearance.
How Does Today’s Thread Lift Differ From Past Versions?
Thread lifts are currently being performed using dissolvable sutures, whereas past versions of this treatment employed permanent sutures that stayed in the skin indefinitely.
As a result, these permanent sutures were a breeding ground for bacteria and infection. The dissolvable sutures significantly reduce the risk of infection as once they are gone, bacteria cannot attach to them and live under the skin.
Results and Recovery
Thread lifts typically require 2-3 days of downtime, and patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, and skin rippling. The results last up to 6 months.
Comparing a Thread Lift to a Surgical Facelift
A thread lift has a significantly shorter and easier recovery and the initial cost of $1500-$4500 is much lower than a surgical facelift which can start at $10,000.
However, a thread lift does not have the same tightening capabilities of a deep tissue facelift. In addition, top plastic surgeons point out that a surgical facelift can last 8-12 years and provide long-lasting results compared to a thread lift.
