Expected Downtime After Common Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments

Honestly, we would all love to get a cosmetic treatment with zero downtime. While some treatments are quick and don’t interrupt your schedule, others do require some downtime. Here’s the expected downtime after common cosmetic dermatology treatments.

Botox

This is what we consider a lunchtime treatment. You can get Botox in 5-20 minutes making it perfect for busy schedules. Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin are great for addressing wrinkles and the best part is there is zero downtime.

Fillers

Like Botox, dermal fillers are relatively quick and come with minimal downtimes. This depends on the type of filler, amount of filler, location, and skill of your injector. Treatment time varies as well depending on these factors. After your treatment, you can expect some mild bruising and swelling.

Microneedling

Microneedling causes your body to produce collagen rich tissue to rejuvenate the skin. Treatment takes around an hour and you can go back to your day after. You may experience mild swelling or redness the day of your treatment. However, many patients choose to combine microneedling with other treatments, like peels, facials, or lasers. In this case, downtime will be different.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a topical treatment that causes the skin to blister and peel over the course of a few days or weeks. Downtime for this treatment depends on which type of peel you choose. For light peels, expect one to three days of redness and peeling. For a moderate peel, expect three to five days, and for aggressive peels, 7-14 days.

Additionally, for the first 24-48 hours you need to avoid gyms, saunas, and sunlight. And do not peel, rub, or pull the skin while it flakes. This can cause the skin to scar and damage or cause pigmentation.

Laser Resurfacing

A wonderful treatment for fine lines, scarring, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. Treatment lasts between 30-60 minutes. This treatment removes skin layers one by one to produce a tighter, smoother complexion. Downtime for laser resurfacing is around 1-3 days with a light laser, and around 5-7 days for medium or stronger laser. Typically, with a light laser treatment you can return to normal activities in 24 hours. However, medium, or strong lasers may require more.
